THE INDIAN RIVER LAGOON SYSTEM includes the waters of the Indian and Banana Rivers as well as MOSQUITO LAGOON. This diverse estuarian system holds a rich variety of marine life. Anglers fishing with Captain Mike can expect to see many species of wading birds such as Ibis, Herons and Rosette Spoonbills. marine mammals include bottle-nose dolphins and Manatees.
The clean waters of Mosquito Lagoon are the most northern location on the Atlantic coast for sea grass beds. these beds are the basis for an extremely diverse exosystem and the reason for our world class trophy Red fishing.
Fishing in Florida is seasonal. SPRING is the beginning of the migration and is prime time for fishing the flats. Bait fish start to return in schools to the shallow water. Redfish and large trout come up on the flats in droves for one reason. To feed!
With the warming of the waters we find Snook and Tarpon migrating to the rivers to join in the feasting after a long journey from the Gulf of Mexico. In SUMMER all species are available but it is the giant Redfish that takes our attention along with Tarpon that populate the edges of our flats. The FALL mullet run signals another feeding frenzy on the flats and channels for Tarpons, Reds and Drums. Redfish can sometimes be seen traveling in large schools. In WINTER all species move to deeper warmer water and on selected warm sunny days we are given the gift of superb shallow water sight fishing, as the fish return to the flats to feed.
